Established in 2008, the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) "Run for the Rainforest" 5K run is the first and only charity race in the greater Metro Washington D.C. area that directly benefits rainforest conservation and indigenous community support. “Run for the Rainforest” began as a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) trail race through Arlington, VA, starting and finishing at Marymount University, Ballston, near the Amazon Conservation Team's headquarter offices.
In 2010, due to popular demand, the race will move to a USATF-certified (pending) road course which runs along Arlington, VA’s Army Navy Drive, starting and finishing at the popular The Shops at Pentagon Row shopping complex.
Over the past two years, the "Run for the Rainforest" has reached out to the greater Metro Washington D.C. community by challenging individuals to think globally, while acting locally, to help stop climate change and global warming by preserving the Amazon rainforest and culture. Both the Inaugural and 2nd annual ACT Run for the Rainforest 5K raised over $50,000 in support of rainforest conservation, while promoting local eco-friendly businesses that support ACT and its mission to work in partnership with indigenous people to conserve biodiversity and culture in South America.
In addition, a school supply drive is held in conjunction with the race to collect items desperately needed for children that attend school in the rainforest villages of Suriname and Colombia; providing supplies for the neediest communities while enriching the lives and educational opportunities of indigenous children.
